Hello from Cantwell, Alaska

Just be glad this isn't your bus stop. (Last Frontier Husband pictured above)

I believe this picture falls in the "one thousand words" category.  Or very possibly, "wish you were here"....  I'm going to go with the former because then that absolves me of the responsibility of writing a clever post this week.

Ever seen a more unlikely bus stop?

  3. OK, this photo does indeed give you a pass on writing a blog post this week! And by the looks of the newscasts the past couple of days, you're not alone - weather like this right down to Georgia. Unbelievable!

Just settle in by the fire with a nice hot chocolate. The snow will go away - eventually.

  4. It looks like that bus is really covered in snow, it looks so short next to your husband. I hope no one is waiting for that bus to arrive :)

  5. WOW, That's a lot of snow!! I'm so sick of winter, and it's only January. :(

  6. Good Morning: When I was a teenager growing up in central Massachusets on the side of a Mountain I can remember lots of scenes like that. Wachusett Mountain was located in the snow belt of central Mass. Great Photo, when you look at it many years from now you will remember clearly.

    Hane a Wonderfull Day,
    John

He said he sunk down in the snow quite a ways while standing next to it but there must be some "hard pack" stuff underneath cuz he's not as tall as a bus. No one but snowmachiners (snowmobilers, to the rest of the world) are waiting at this bus....

    Hi John,

One great thing about blogs: I keep finding out how many people have to get along in snow weather. It's not just us in the far north. I didn't know Mass. had a "snow belt" so I learned something new. Thanks! CB

  11. The school bus is staying. Did the Husband come back?

  12. Christine when I was a kid I would have loved for that to be my bus stop. No school! Not so much now though it just freezes me to look at it. It may take a while to get that bus out.:-)

Yes, the bus is permanent but the LFG hubby came home. He was on a snowmachine trip when that pic was taken, so fond memories for him when he looks at it. A laugh for me when I do.

  14. I think the phrase 'not a snowballs chance in hell that it will be going anywhere soon' is fitting. I have quit moaning and grumbling after seeing this!

Just looking at it does put a chill into one, doesn't it? I think I'll go put some hot cocoa on....

  18. Snow! last week we had sub 0 weather. This week it has been 3 days of highs of 40 to 50! It feels balmy. I went out happily with a snow shovel. Can't really see the ground yet, but I am dreaming of a thaw - hope the thaw goes your way also.

  19. @gloria
A thaw would be great but then it would just freeze again. A thaw with springtime included would be swell!

I'm sure there are plenty of Alaskans who would be glad to ship you their portion of snow, if it was possible...if only.

    Hello,

Yes, we have all your snow but for a nominal fee we will begrudgingly return some to you.

Yup, the shot is for real, undoctored in any way.

Hope to read your report about the Philly flower show on your blog.

  27. The first thing that crossed my mind was that those lucky kids probably got the day off from school. We had plenty of days like that when I was growing up in Minnesota. Hurray the bus is stuck!

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Barbara
We usually don't get to many "snow days" off from school up here. If there is a big snow overnight and the plows are busy in the downtown/business/freeway areas, then sometimes the kids get a day home. Typically not too often, maybe once or twice max. None so far this school year.

  30. oh my god!! I need to learn more about the climate in alaska. It's crazy that all this stuff melts at some point!

  31. @Wendy
Yes, we are a muddy mess in spring. I have to refill windshield wiper fluid then cuz it's so dirty at that time.

    Thanks for visiting,

  32. I live in Cantwell, Alaska , don't get that much snow, think this is a fake picture..............

    ReplyDelete
  33. @AnonymousNot only is the knowledge to fake a picture beyond me and my husband (pictured), our ancient software isn't capable.

I'll pass on your doubt to the hubby, it'll make him feel good he had such an "unbelievable" time.

    1. Hello again, Mr. Anonymous,

Have it your way. I went to the snowmachiner pictured for some clarification. I hope you appreciate what I went through for you. I had to sit through one small map lecture, an internet tutorial, and a recap of every snowmachine trip made in the area for the last 6 years.

The result is not a set of GPS coordinates (sorry) but this bit for clarification: approximately 50 miles east of Cantwell, along the Denali Highway. As there is no closer/bigger village to identify the spot, the word "Cantwell" was used as a designation.

      Feel better?

Now don't make me go through that again! Just ignore any discrepancies, errors, or outright lies you may read on this site, I beg you!
